weird. can you buy a disc drive separately?

You can. You can also use a drive on another machine connected to the same network, or use a Flash drive as a boot volume… but isn’t this weird!? I understand the rationale for removing it from the macbook air, or even the macbooks for that matter… saves space, weight and battery life, but why the mini!? I think a lot of people still use these to play dvds and whatnot… but I think  I just answered my own question- Apple wants you to buy everything from iTunes.
